She is the glamorous Hollywood star who has graced screens and red carpets around the world for decades.

But Barbra Streisand has said that she has a “horrible” side to her face which makes her look masculine.

In an interview with the Daily Mail's Weekend magazine, the 72-year-old told how she was labelled “the ugly duckling” when she began her acting career and only later realised that she was pretty.

However she said that she has “two different sides” to her face - one “good” and the other unattractive.

She said: “At first I didn’t know which side was good. I have got to know my face and I can honestly say I am both. From certain angles, maybe I am beautiful. From others I am horrible. So that’s the truth. That’s my truth anyway. I don’t think it will ever change because that’s what I see.”

Streisand, who appeared in her first film Funny Girl in 1968, said that when she went on to direct Yentl in 1983, in which she played the title role, she deliberately filmed the “bad” side of her face when she needed to appear more masculine.

The title character is a Jewish girl who decides to pose as a man in order to receive an education in Talmudic law.

“When I did Yentl I shot myself as a boy on the side I don’t like,” Streisand said. “I shot Yentl as a girl on my good side. The bad side I used because I wanted to look more masculine.”

The singer and actress has just brought out a new album featuring duets with a series of stars as well as her 47-year-old son Jason Gould. She said she would now like to write an autobiography.

“The story of The Way We Were [in 1973] is about an ugly duckling who finds Robert Redford. But if you look back I don’t look too bad,” she said. “Maybe I’ve stood the test of time. Over 50 years. Or maybe at some point it just went out of my mind. I stopped thinking about it.

"Although one of the reasons to write my book is that I want to tell the truth.”
