Instagram gets a makeover: What do you think?
Instagram has had a makeover and we’re loving it.
Gone is the brown logo with the old camera. Instagram officials felt that the old look did not accurately represent the numerous applications that can now be used, including gifs, videos, and collages.
According to Ian Spalter, the head of design, the old logo felt outdated, and “wanted to create a look that would represent the community’s full range of expression”.

The result: a simple outline of a camera on a rainbow background. The trick was changing the logo enough to make it feel fresh while not straying too far from the original icon. The camera recalls the old logo, but the design team wanted something simpler, leading to the white glyph. The warm gradient background goes back to the original rainbow colors.
In addition to Instagram getting an update, her sister apps, Layout, Boomerang, and Hyperlapse also got a new look. All have the same theme of the warm rainbow, but Layout and Boomerang both got new icons too. The reasoning was “to better represent what the apps help you create?—?a collection of photos, or a mini video that loops forward and backward.”
Instagram’s New UI
But, Instagram’s icon was not the only thing to get updated: the interior of the app also got a new look. According the Spalter, “while the icon is a colorful doorway into the Instagram app, once inside the app, we believe the color should come directly from the community’s photos and videos.” As a result, the blue buttons and bar have been replaced with a simple white, meaning that the only color inside the app comes from the images displayed (and those little orange notification bubbles).
