In her early teens, Janet never considered herself as a “girly girl” and would always wear a suit and tie with suspenders.
With women becoming powerful with their own identity, the 55-year-old shared her love and enthusiasm of how women have gotten “comfortable in their skin, in their size, in being full-figured.”
“You had to always be thin and look a certain way,” said Jackson. “And now it’s all accepted and it is all beautiful and I absolutely love that.”
More recently, Lizzo has become an inspiration to women of all shapes and sizes — including Jackson — as she is living proof that curvier ladies have the same impact in the world as smaller-built women. Janet was captivated by Lizzo’s confidence and the impact it had on the newer generations to unapologetically be themselves and love their own skin.
Similar to Billie Eilish and Janelle Monáe‘s signature styles that prove their body was not the “centerpiece of the work,” the five-time Grammy-winning artist shared how she looked back at old photos and noticed she often wore black, suites, and never liked to have her body exposed.
Despite having her own style and aesthetic for her albums such as Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, she would still get criticism. She proved that she was able to become a top artist without the need of revealing her skin.
“It was something very tough, very difficult,” Jackson continued. “But I’m glad I walked through it. I’m really glad I got in. It was a way of accepting and loving, accepting yourself and your body.”
Jackson also opened up about the impact her super bowl performance with Justin Timberlake left on her and shares her thoughts on how women view their bodies as the generations continue to evolve.
