'The 5th Wave' Isn't On Netflix, But You Can Stream These 7 Epic Movies Instead

Publish date: 2024-06-17

Chloë Grace Moretz kicked major alien butt as Cassie in The 5th Wave, the big screen adaptation of Rick Yancey's YA book of the same name. The movie failed to become a box office hit, but it did offer fans with another awesome young woman fighting against evil in a dystopian future. For those of you who missed the movie when it was released in theaters in January, there is hope! The movie is now out on DVD and digital release, but is The 5th Wave on Netflix?

Unfortunately, The 5th Wave isn't available to stream on Netflix. It is, however, available to rent on Amazon Video and iTunes, and, of course, fans can always rent the movie on DVD through Netflix. (For those of you who don't know, a DVD is a physical disc. Sigh.) It's too bad that The 5th Wave isn't on Netflix, especially since Moretz is continuing her rise to stardom with her role in the summer smash Neighbors 2.

Yet while Netflix might be missing out on The 5th Wave, the website does have a few movies that tackle the same themes available for fans. The 5th Wave is defined by its strong female protagonist and science fiction action genre, and, while it might seem like every other movie released today is a Hunger Games wannabe, that's not the case. The seven movies below are all similar to The 5th Wave in that they kick butt when it comes to female representation in the sci-fi/action genres, but unfortunately, they're anomalies in Hollywood.

1. Aeon Flux

Aeon Flux starred Charlize Theron as a kickass assassin in a futuristic world. It failed to make a big impression when it was released in 2005, but it's the kind of female superhero movie we're dying for now.

2. Hick

Fans of Moretz can catch her as a rebellious young runaway in Hick. While it's not as action-packed as The 5th Wave, Hick deals with similar themes of female empowerment and coming of age.

3. Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy, based on the novel by Richelle Mead, might be more fantasy than science fiction, but you get the idea.

4. Serenity

Serenity is probably a bit more sci-fi than 5th Wave fans are used to, but the fun movie is full of strong women, evil aliens and familial bonds, so that should ring familiar.

5. V For Vendetta

Natalie Portman's iconic turn as Evey in V for Vendetta no doubt inspired this new wave of female heroines tackling tyrants. It's a bit darker than The 5th Wave, but that shouldn't stop you from giving it a shot.

6. Final Girl

If you're in the mood to watch a girl get bloody, then look no further than Tyler Shields' somewhat controversial Final Girl, starring Abigail Breslin.

7. Honorable TV Mention: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Netflix has every season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer available for streaming, and fans of The 5th Wave should definitely watch it. Buffy inspired generations of girls to go out there and fight, and I think Cassie was probably one of them.

Until The 5th Wave is available to stream on Netflix, there's no shortage of movies to stream and shows to marathon. Still, I think I speak for everyone when I say, let's get The 5th Wave streaming ASAP, OK?
