The Fall 2023 Colors Everyone Will Be Wearing

Publish date: 2024-06-18

Every season has its own color palette, but autumn has to be my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, the pastels of springtime and summer’s tropical hues are lovely (not to mention, they inspire quite the dopamine kick). But, I live for the comfort earthy neutrals exude, and according to stylists, the fall colors everyone will be wearing in 2023 fit the season’s cozy theme seamlessly.

When you think of fall, what colors come to mind? The season is often associated with the hues of its changing leaves. Bright green leaves turn as the temperature starts dropping, and becoming a rouge crimson, yellow, or look as though they were burnt to an orange crisp. Some leaves even turn a royal plum. All of these shades remain seasonal staples year after year, but autumn’s color story is expanding.

For fall 2023, there’s an emphasis on complementary hues that can either stand on their own, as well as some rich pops of color that provide a moody contrast. We asked four stylists and fashion experts to break down the specific hues they anticipate will be everywhere this upcoming fall, so you can get ahead of the trends.

“Viva Magenta was not only chosen as Pantone's Color of the Year but is also front and center with the long-awaited Barbie movie,” says Naina Singla, fashion stylist and style expert. “This color was also highlighted on the runway in the Valentino Fall/Winter 2022 collection. We can expect to see this color in the fall and winter of 2023 as a statement color of choice, incorporated into a monochromatic look or as an accent color.”

Color Prediction: Chalky Cream and Bone

According to Angelique Joseph, SVP of design & development at Naturalizer, “We're anticipating tones in the cream, bone, and winter white family to be a big color for the season as tonal dressing is still a big look and feeds into the Quiet Luxury trend." In addition, she says, "We've seen these colors come through strong all over the runway and most recently in our Europe inspiration shopping. Trend forecasting also hit these colors very heavily." Joseph also says the color is already trending in footwear.

Color Prediction: Red Dahlia

Fall will be a big season for bold red. “Red Dahlia was prevalent among the Yves Saint Laurent and Prada Fall '23 shows and The Row Spring '24 runway show,” says Singla. “At Gucci, we also saw it paired up beautifully with a buttery shade of yellow. Red Dahlia by definition is known as ‘elegance personified,’ and can be a sophisticated accent for the colder months layered underneath coats and paired with bold red accessories like a top handle mini bag.”

Color Prediction: Burgundy

Jay Hines, celebrity stylist, points to “collections such as Victoria Beckham, Hermès, and Stella McCartney, as well as seeing what people have been leaning to on social media" as to why the rich, deep hue will be prominent.

Color Prediction: Chocolate Brown

“At the Saint Laurent Fall '23 show, we saw shades of brown and even head-to-toe tonal looks with this color gracing the runway,” says Singla. “Prada also debuted chocolate brown alongside other neutrals like grey, black, and white. This color is not only versatile but can also easily be paired up with a variety of other colors." According to the stylist, the shade "is shaping up to be the new ‘black’ for fall 2023.”
